About BioSilta

BioSilta’s successes in biotechnology are the result of the expertise, work and determination of its five-strong team.

Founder and Scientific Adviser: Prof Dr Peter Neubauer

Peter formed BioSilta in 2007 on the back of an eminent career in Bioprocess Engineering spanning 20 years and several countries. His PhD on high cell density processes for production of recombinant protein production was carried out at the Microbiology Institute of the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald, Germany.

Peter then spent two years working under renowned bioscientist, Prof Sven-Olof Enfors, at the Royal Institute of Technology KTH in Stockholm, Sweden, before spending five years in charge of the fermentation plant at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Germany. In addition to his work at BioSilta, he is Professor for Bioprocess Engineering at Oulu University.

Outside the office, Peter is an avid outdoor man – a cross-country skier by Winter and orienteer by Summer.

Chief Executive Officer: Russell Golson

UK-based Russell has held a number of key international management positions at a range of life science companies including Munich-based genomics solutions provider MWG Biotech and microbiology instrumentation specialist Don Whitley Scientific, in Leeds. Before that, Russell spent 15 years as Chief Technician in Nuclear Submarines for the British Royal Navy.

In his spare time, Russell likes distance running and has completed the London marathon. He loves to walk and mountain-bike in his native Yorkshire Dales, North England.

Research and development manager: Dr Antti Vasala

Dr Antti Vasala is a molecular biologist and genetic engineer from Oulu University with extensive experience in microbial cultivations and bioprocesses. In 1998 he completed his groundbreaking PhD reserch into the lytic system of the phage LL-H.

In collaboration with Peter, he has been a key player in the development of Senbit®, an acclaimed wireless batch culture measurement system, and the evolution of EnBase for BioSilta. He has also held commercial research and development management posts.

By night, Antti is a captivating saxophonist and clarinettist. He even composes his own music.

Product manager: Maria Ruottinen

Maria is a University of Oulu bioprocess engineering graduate who recently joined the team to oversee product development. She previously worked in Lithuania as a microbiologist in process development for worldwide molecular biotech company Fermentas UAB.

Her favourite pastimes include singing in a quartet, hiking and needlework – she’s even made a ball gown!

Chief technician: Tuula Karppinen

Tuula oversees the laboratory work and product manufacture at BioSilta. Her wide-ranging experience spans the academic, pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors and includes working for international drug development company, FibroGen Europe.

Most of Tuula’s free time is taken up with her family – she loves nothing more than to go skating with her two sons!

Don’t let them Bug You!

Do greedy bugs spoil your cell cultures?

Like children let loose in a sweet shop, your bugs will eat too much if the food is there.

When they over-eat, bugs use up too much oxygen, which stunts their growth.

And, even worse, greedy bugs soil their own environment with nasty metabolites!

Over-fed bugs get sick. They might even die. Bugs need limits.

Get healthy happy bugs!

EnBase controls your bugs’ diet to stop over-feeding.

It is formulated to help you raise lots of healthy bugs.

EnBase technology lets you harvest your bugs at their healthiest.

Be as happy as a bug in EnBase!
